Essentializing disability does relate to Young’s discussion of “inspiration porn” in her "I'm not your inspiration, thank you very much" 2014 Ted Talk. Young describes "inspiration porn" as an inspirational statement like "the only disability in life is a bad attitude" or "do not quit until you try first" which uses disability as an inspiration to people who are not disabled. As Young mentions, no amount of positive attitude that a disabled person has is going to turn a flight of steps into a ramp. Changes need to be made to assist people who are disabled.
